Science Centres

When you think ‘luxury cruise ship’, you may be thinking casinos, hot tubs, high-budget West End shows. What you may not be envisioning is… a Science Centre. Although somewhat unassuming on the surface, these purpose-built spaces are the beating heart of each expedition trip, embodying the most prized values of your Expedition Team. Crammed with state-of-the-art technology and staffed by leading experts in a variety of fields, the Science Centre invites you to be more than just a passive witness to the world’s most enigmatic environments. In your role as Citizen Scientist, you are encouraged to contribute to groundbreaking research and actively advocate for the conservation of our planet’s most precious treasures.

The Science Center is for absolutely anyone on board—the Expedition Team will be keen to involve everyone, and consequently usually operate an open-door policy. In the Science Centre, you will work with experts from a range of fields, such as geology, zoology, oceanography, marine biology and more. They’ll be delighted to share their knowledge with you and you are encourage you to play an active role in the work they do.

What should I wear? What should I bring?

There is nothing specific you need to wear or bring to the Science Centre aboard an expedition cruise ship. Feel free to turn up as you are, in comfortable clothing and sensible shoes.

Where can I experience Science Centres?

  • Citizen Scientists are doing valuable work in Antarctica, collecting and analysing phytoplankton samples to understand the impact of melting ice.
  • In the Arctic, Citizen Scientists are encouraged to record their observations on whale watching and Aurora Borealis excursions, to increase scientific understanding.
  • Use underwater drones and microscopes to analyse marine life in Alaska.
  • There’s often a focus on studying astronomy under the clear skies of the Galápagos.
  • Marine conservation is at the heart of all cruises to the Kimberley as guests spend time studying the tidally driven ecosystems.
