Calling all animal lovers! Whether you dream of laughing at frolicking penguins in Antarctica, swimming with marine iguanas in the Galápagos or getting drenched by the spray of a humpback whale breaching a fjord, an expedition cruise can get you closer to wildlife than you ever thought possible. Leading you right to the heart of some of the most biodiverse regions on earth, this is nothing like taking a trip to the local zoo. This time, you’re in their territory, their natural habitat and revelling in the unforgettable experience of seeing them eat, sleep and play in the wild. Make sure you have your camera at the ready!
If there’s something in particular you’ve set your heart on seeing, then make sure you do your research and book the right voyage. For example, if you want to be in Antarctica, binoculars in hand, for penguin hatching season, then you’ll want to be there in December or January. You’ll spot the most dolphins and sharks around the coast of the Galápagos in the dry season between June and November. And if you’re hoping to catch a glimpse of an elusive Arctic Polar Bear, you should make sure you’re there in the spring.
From kayaking and Zodiac tours to hiking and snorkelling, there are a range of ways to get close to the wildlife in these incredible destinations. However, your safety is the priority and there are also strict guidelines about keeping a respectful distance from the animals, not touching them, not feeding them, and not disturbing their homes, so always listen carefully to your Expedition Team before each excursion.
For wildlife spotting in any destination, the easiest thing to do is wear exactly what you would on a hiking excursion. In colder conditions, that’s going to be thermals, plenty of layers, waterproof trousers and jacket, rubber boots, hat, scarf and gloves. For wildlife spotting in balmier climates, wear light, breathable materials like linen and cotton, sturdy walking shoes and a wide-brimmed hat to protect your face from the sun. Wherever you are, remember to bring sunglasses, sunscreen, a refillable water bottle, plus a camera and binoculars if you wish.
