Zodiacs

When it comes to expedition cruises, Zodiacs are truly a staple, as much a part of the experience as the sea, the sky and the ship itself. Accommodating 8-10 passengers, Zodiacs are sturdy, inflatable boats with a motor, their small size making them ideal for navigating tiny inlets and bays. Indeed, within those tranquil moments after the guide cuts the engine, floating quietly through glassy waters, you’ll likely find some of the highlights of your trip. Imagine slipping serenely past Arctic ice floes, glittering glaciers and jagged, mountainous skylines stretching endlessly ahead. Picture zooming through turquoise waves, vivid coral reefs and darting shoals of tropical fish beneath you. Or see yourself weaving in and out of towering icebergs, camera in hand, ready to take the perfect shot of a snow petrel swooping overhead. These are the kind of unforgettable moments you will only experience aboard a Zodiac.

Climbing aboard a Zodiac for the first time, you’ll find that they are stable, durable and very safe. You’ll sit on the edge, with secure ropes to grip for balance. At the helm will be your specially trained Zodiac guide, who will not only control the direction and speed of the vessel with ease, but will also be able to shed light on the unique environments you’re exploring, and preparing you for the things you will see, do and experience that day.

  • Enjoy the best seat in the house as you navigate the wildlife reserves, glaciers and islands of Alaska.
  • Take a Zodiac through the Kimberley, the iconic red cliffs and cascading waterfalls rising up on all sides.

What should I wear?

It goes without saying that waterproof gear is essential on a Zodiac excursion. You should come prepared with a waterproof jacket, waterproof trousers, a waterproof bag for your phone or camera and of course a lifejacket, provided by the cruise line. For colder climates, you can expect a chilly breeze, so wrap up warm with thermal layers, a hat, scarf, gloves and a fleece. As always, sunscreen and a refillable water bottle are a good idea too.
