There's a particular kind of magic in sailing under canvas. This is the world of Sea Cloud Cruises; three magnificent tall ships that carry guests not just across the seas and oceans, but back to an age of elegance and adventure.
At the heart of the fleet sits the original Sea Cloud, built in 1931 as a private yacht for an American heiress, her antique furnishings and marble bathrooms still whispering of old-world glamour. Her sister ships, Sea Cloud II and the newer Sea Cloud Spirit, blend that same romantic spirit with modern comforts, each carrying only a small number of guests for a truly intimate voyage.
Imagine a day spent sailing the Mediterranean coast or the Caribbean isles. Gourmet dining awaits with menus sourced from local markets, sun-soaked decks offer relaxation in the sunshine and the small ships offer access to hidden harbours far beyond the reach of larger vessels. For the adventurous, there's even the chance to climb the mast and watch the sails unfurl by hand.
This is cruising for those who value authenticity and craftsmanship – voyages for cruise connoisseurs who are ready to experience a unique way of exploring the world.
Sea Cloud’s cabins vary across the three ships, but all share a sense of nautical heritage. The original 1931 Sea Cloud retains antique furnishings and marble bathrooms in her most historic suites which retain their old-world character. Sea Cloud II blends that romance with more modern comforts, while Sea Cloud Spirit, the newest addition, offers the most spacious accommodation in the fleet, including balcony suites with golden fixtures, minibars and WiFi. Every stateroom across the fleet is an outside cabin, so there's always a view of the sea.
Wellness facilities aboard Sea Cloud Spirit offer an extensive spa with two treatment rooms, a Finnish sauna, steam bath and relaxation lounge, plus a beauty salon for hair and nails. Massages and treatments are available at an additional charge. A sea-view gym offers cardio and weights, and on some sailings an onboard activity manager leads sunrise yoga and guided hikes ashore.
Sea Cloud II has a smaller fitness area, while the original Sea Cloud keeps things simpler still, in keeping with her vintage character.
Life aboard Sea Cloud cruises is spent relaxing and enjoying complete destination immersion. In the evenings, live music in the lounge and sundowners in the Lido Bar offer a sociable and atmospheric ambience.
By day, guests can climb the mast to help hoist the sails, swim from the marina platform, kayak, snorkel, paddleboard and take Zodiac excursions ashore to hidden harbours. Beach barbecues and shore excursions round out the experience, with itineraries often calling at less-visited ports.
Sea Cloud's enrichment is focused on culture and destination experiences. Cultivated Journeys explore history, art, cuisine and wellness at each destination, while Curated Moments ashore might mean a private concert, an after-hours museum visit, or a tasting led by the ship's own chef. Some sailings are run in cooperation with National Geographic, adding expert-led guidance to each itinerary.
Sustainability sits at the heart of Sea Cloud cruises. The ships are powered by wind whenever possible, with sails hoisted by hand. On board, plastic use is minimised through glass straws and reusable water bottles and menus are built around ingredients sourced from local markets at each port. It's a quieter, more considered approach to luxury cruising – one which trades scale and spectacle for tradition and a lighter footprint.
